Make art

Get to know your friends’ creative sides at one of several places in San Francisco where groups can make art together. At Spark Ceramic SF, you’ll get your hands dirty crafting clay into anything from a plate to a planter. Participants paint their work too, and the finished items often are so beautiful they’d be right at home at an art fair booth. For a more transparent experience, grab a few friends and sign up for a course at Public Glass, San Francisco’s only public access glass school. Beginners are welcome, and the school regularly hosts six-hour introductory classes on the weekends.

‘Tag’ a wall

At Canvas SF, spray painting is not only allowed, it’s encouraged! This studio offers a unique team-building experience that starts with a discussion about the roots of graffiti culture and a life-size coloring book to learn color theory and fades. The group will then compete in a graffiti battle and learn how to structure letters as they create a final masterpiece. Kids can participate too—ask about Canvas SF’s “Spray and Play” parties where groups of kids get art instruction, a blank canvas and spray paint, all in one party. Canvas SF will provide paint masks and gloves.

Plant a tiny garden

Host a planting party at Urban Farm Girls. Bring your friends to this beautiful garden design studio and boutique right in Bayview. Shop home goods, plants and décor. Get a pot and make your own succulent collection. Check out their website for a full list of summer events.

Tour a Mead Brewery

Try an alcoholic beverage that our ancestors were consuming 4,000 years ago during a private tour of Meadery SF. One of the oldest alcoholic drinks in the world, mead, has a cultural history in Asia, Europe and Africa. Meadery SF will create a customized event for your group, where you’ll learn about its history and how local honey is turned into mead. Taste the raw ingredients, see mead in process and sample the final product.

Get on the South Side Beer Ride

This free beer shuttle makes the rounds of local breweries on the first Wednesday of every month, and it’s a great way for a group to hang out and try awesome local craft beers. Stops include Laughing Monk, 7 Stills, Triple Voodoo, Harmonic, Ferment Drink Repeat, Barebottle, Magnolia and Speakeasy, and you can hop on or hop off at any stop. This free shuttle runs between from 6:30 p.m. and 10:30 p.m., and you need to be 21 (with an ID) to ride. You need to register here, but shuttle organizers say save the paper—you don’t need to print out your ticket.

Try one or visit them all with your friends. Summertime is more fun in Bayview-Hunters Point.
