Spring has sprung, and so has the art scene out at the Hunters Point Shipyard Artists community! Spring Open Studios is the perfect time to bring the family to visit some of the 120 local artists on Saturday and Sunday (May 4-5), and to browse and buy their art. These painters, sculptors, and crafters are members of a group of artists who work in the Hunters Point Shipyard, and 2019 marks a 30-year tradition of opening their studios to the public.
All are invited to spend the day visiting studios (all within an easy walking radius), where you can meet the artists, ask them about their work, and buy art on the spot. Local Bayview-Hunters Point vendors will provide food, and there will be plenty of parking for this free event.
Studios are open 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. both days, and Sunday will feature a special showing of Bayview experimental short films in the Building 101 Auditorium at the Hunters Point Shipyard. The presentation, called “To the Point,” will look at themes of identity and the relationship between people and the environment. Afterward, filmmakers Sofia Córdova, Desirée Holman, Anne McGuire, Haleigh Nickerson, and Yetunde Olagbaju will talk about their artistic process.
Don’t miss this opportunity to check out the local art scene. The Hunters Point Shipyard Artists only open their studios to the public two times a year for events like this!
