The official arrival of spring this month is cause for celebration itself, but there’s no reason to stop there. Check out these events this month to commemorate everything from National Women’s History Month to St. Patrick’s Day.
Where: Bayview Opera House, 4705 3rd St.
When: 11 a.m.-4 p.m., Sunday, March 17
This day will be devoted to the late Selena Quintanilla, one of the most influential artists of her generation. Selenabracion, celebrating the life and music of the queen of Tejano music, will include vendors, a movie singalong, performances, and a costume contest. A Lantinx vendor marketplace will bring together the community’s culture and craftmanship for a unique shopping experience.
Where: Bayview Linda-Brooks Burton Branch Library, 5075 Third St.
When: 7-8 p.m., Thursday, March 14
Cost: Free, no sign-up required
This hour of storytelling is an excellent way to celebrate National Women’s History Month in the Bayview. Muriel Johnson will be on hand to tell the stories of brave, inspiring women through history who have made significant decisions, discoveries, and changes. Johnson, who recently was a featured storyteller at the Sierra Storytelling Festival, has performed in venues ranging from rural towns in the Eastern Shore of Maryland to communities in Cape Town, South Africa.
St. Patrick’s Day
When: Sunday, March 17
Join your local leprechauns on March 17 for a celebratory beer honoring St. Patrick’s Day. Seven Stills Distillery and Laughing Monk Brewing, which are next-door neighbors, have extensive ales on tap. If you want an early start to the day, join instructor Armando Luna at Laughing Monk at 10 a.m. for 90 minutes of yoga in the taproom followed by a beer.
Where: Bayview Hill
When: 10 a.m.-12 p.m., Sunday, March 24
There’s no better way to welcome spring than to get outside. On March 24, artist and naturalist Margo Bors will lead a nature walk through Bayview Hills starting at the entrance to Bayview Park on Key Avenue (two blocks east of Third Street). Bors will share her knowledge of native plants and how she has seen the Hill change over the years. Bring a snack and water and dress in layers.
Where: California Academy of Sciences, 55 Music Concourse Dr.
When: Friday-Sunday, March 22-24
For one three-day weekend this month, the California Academy of Sciences will open its doors for free for Bayview-Hunters Point residents as part of its Neighborhood Free Days. That means that with a driver’s license or other proof of residency, you can save the $36 ticket and spend a day immersed in the wonders of the universe. The museum is home to a planetarium, an aquarium, and natural history exhibits, and this weekend you can catch a display of life-size dinosaurs and twice-daily penguin feedings.
So there is no need to wonder about what you’re doing this month. Pencil in these fun events on your calendar and enjoy arts, science, music, nature, and beer in Bayview!
