A WATERFRONT TRANSFORMATION 150 YEARS IN THE MAKINGSM

The rich history of The SF ShipyardSM, situated along the City’s southeastern shoreline, includes notable time as an industrial hub, a naval base, and as the site of one of the largest artist colonies in the nation. It’s an iconic location with an industrious legacy and a bright future ahead.

1866

A.W. Von Schmidt and Thomas Hardy, two ruddy San Francisco entrepreneurs, break ground on a 450-foot drydock that becomes the foundation for one of the world’s most impressive shipyards.

1941

The U.S. Navy acquires the shipyard from long-time owner, Bethlehem Steel Dry Docks. They rename the facility the Hunters Point Naval Shipyard and immediately commence shipbuilding efforts for World War II.

2013

On June 26th, ground is broken on a collection of 88 townhomes and condos at The SF Shipyard; the first families move into the development in 2015.

Today

The SF Shipyard is an emerging neighborhood where several hundred families are already living, playing, and growing. The Storehouse, situated at the entry to the community, provides locally made necessities, snacks, and specialty goods; a place for morning coffee or a sweet treat midday. Parks, a playground and an artist walk are open to the public. As it develops, The SF Shipyard is planned to reconnect the surrounding neighborhoods to the southeastern waterfront, and the southeastern waterfront to the rest of San Francisco.
