It’s hard to believe, but June marks the 50th anniversary of the Summer of Love, a time forever linked with San Francisco and the mystique of an unforgettable era of cultural breakthroughs.
In tune with that legacy, June also brings a cavalcade of Pride events celebrating the city’s spirit and diversity.
Here’s a sampling of Pride events in San Francisco and Bayview for this special summer:
Raise A Glass Fundraiser: Pride Edition
The folks at Laughing Monk Brewing will be toasting the Lyric Center for LGBTQQ Youth and the AIDS Family and Youth Foundation. The organizations will receive $1 from every beer sold. Kawashima’s Kitchen will provide a ramen bar from 5-9 p.m. and DJ ILL Padrino will spin tunes from 6-10 p.m. If you can’t make it, post an image of yourself raising a glass on social media, tag Laughing Monk and hashtag #RaiseAGlass and they’ll donate a dollar for every post made on June 15. Krewe de Kinque Mardi Gras Club Benefit
The Krewe de Kinque (KDK) Mardi Gras Club will hold its monthly benefit at The Edge bar in the Castro. Locals and visitors alike are welcome at this event featuring an optional $10 Beer/Soda Bust, 4-7 p.m., fun raffle prizes, Jell-O shots, drink specials, and an amazing show. Got talent? Show it off at the open show. Terrific singers, musicians, drag, great music, fun decor and a hot crowd. Proceeds benefit KDK’s Bal Masque charity fund. 21 and over; no cover. Summer of Love in the Grove
Calamus Fellowship, in conjunction with The GLBT Historical Society and the National Aids Memorial Grove, invites the community to celebrate the Summer of Love on the summer solstice, June 18, noon-5 p.m. in the National AIDS Memorial Grove in Golden Gate Park. The Father’s Day event is open to all ages and to Queer families of all stripes. Donations will go to Calamus, The GLBT Historical Society, and the AIDS Memorial Grove. Workshops, teach-ins, tie-dyeing, picnics, music, art and lots more 60’s magic. Pride Honoree and rock ‘n’ roll legend Blackberry will be there, followed by a “trip back to 1967” DJ set by Brontez Purnell. SF Gay Pride Sunset Cruise
Brian Kent Productions and Chris Hastings of Lookout team up to bring back this unique Gay Pride experience. The cruise begins at Pier 40 on a one-of-a-kind passenger ferry, viewing the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz, The Bay Bridge, and the city skyline at sunset. Music by award-winning, international producer/DJ Barry Harris of Thunderpuss. Complimentary bon voyage toast, drink specials, full bar on board. Pier 40, Friday, June 23, 6-10 p.m., $65.
19TH Annual Pride Brunch
Gary Virginia and Donna Sachet’s 19th Annual Pride Brunch honors the Grand Marshals of the LGBT Pride Parade. The three-hour benefit features musical entertainment by the Dixieland Dykes +3 and the Hotel Whitcomb Grand Ballroom festooned with rainbow bunting, balloons, and florals. Raffle prizes, auction, unlimited gourmet buffet. Proceeds support SF-based Positive Resource Center. Locals and visitors are welcome. Advance ticket sales only: $75-$150; VIP hosts, tables and sponsors. Hotel Whitcomb, 1231 Market St., Saturday, June 24, 11 a.m.-2 p.m.
The San Francisco Pride Parade and March attracts over 240 contingents and 100,000 spectators a year. In 2016, 30 floats and more than 30,000 people marched along Market Street through the heart of downtown San Francisco. The parade is made up of community groups and honorees (more than 50 percent of the makeup of the parade) along with corporate supporters and government allies.
