Kids and their parents – and anyone else who enjoys the glitz, glamour and grace of the circus world – will find a cavalcade of entertainment with hometown flair at the sixth annual Circus Festival.
The free-admission family-friendly event on Sunday, July 30, unfolds at NOW Hunters Point, featuring two performing companies, Prescott Circus Theatre and Circus Bella. Gates open at noon, setting off a summer afternoon of fun, food, arts activities, and circus games that drew over 1,500 participants last year.
Amble along amid the sawdust with stilt walkers! Enjoy treats from local food vendors (such as Auntie April’s Chicken and Waffles and Yvonne’s Southern Sweets)! Marvel at the acrobats! Swoosh down the Giant 100-Foot Fun Slide!
The big top magic begins at 1:45 pm with the Prescott Circus Theatre, a nonprofit that uses the circus and theater arts to enrich the lives of young people by developing confidence, teamwork, artistic talent, and dedication to success. The Oakland-based Theatre, which offers free circus instruction to low-income children, will showcase an exciting array of young performers.
Next on the bill is Circus Bella, an open-air contemporary circus that energizes diverse audiences through high-quality performances and a creative rush of community spirit. The performers will present their most recent production, “Bay City Rhapsody,” blending the magic of daily city life with circus excitement and pageantry. The mix includes poetry, live music, and comedy, featuring static trapeze skills, rope walking, a nine-member juggling act, contortionism, hula-hoop exhibitions, original clowning, and a live band playing original music.
The Circus Festival is presented by Bayview Opera House and NOW Hunters Point to promote culture and the arts in the Bayview Hunters Point community.
Bayview Opera House, founded in 1989, manages its programs from the historic South San Francisco Opera House. NOW Hunters Point, supported by Pacific Gas and Electric Company, is transforming the former Hunters Point Power Plant site into a dynamic community activity center.
“Bayview Opera House is super excited to present the 6th Annual Circus Festival, again in collaboration with NOW Hunters Point,” Barbara Ockel, Bayview Opera House executive director, told SFStation. “Our partnerships throughout the community make it possible for us to extend our reach to parts of the Bayview Hunters Point community that lack adequate access to arts and culture.”
Added Allegra Madsen, Program Designer for NOW Hunters Point: “The Circus Festival is the most exhilarating event of the NOW Hunters Point summer season. We are excited to once again work with The Bayview Opera House, a pillar of the Bayview Hunters Point arts community, to produce this magical event that connects local residents to a fun, family-friendly cultural event.”
